Who is Adam Van Bavel...
I vowed to myself wherever I bought my home, I would become part of my community--not just live in it. I am not running in this election for myself; I am running for my community. I feel betrayed by the politics of today, and I believe that we need someone at the community level helping to shape the decisions which will directly impact the future of our city. I feel that laws should be passed with the public's interest, not to promote a personal or political agenda. I want to be your liaison to communicate our needs and improve our city. As your neighbor, I feel my best interest will be served by seeing yours come to fruition.
I have no ties to a specific party because I believe in the ideas of people--not parties. Why would I lock myself into one frame of thought? Times change and so do needs, and right now Baltimore needs a change. Baltimore needs someone who can focus on creative solutions rather than create or dwell on problems. I will develop solutions and make decisions based on feedback from my community-- decisions that will become actions, actions that will bring about change. Whether through local or national outreach, my goal is improvement.
While I don't have a background rich in political experience, I do have a proven track record in community activism. I have served my community my entire life--wherever I have lived. I have worked in non-profit, tutored and mentored children, as well as worked multiple jobs while going to school and caring for my grandparents...I have lived!
"Without a struggle, there can be no progress", Frederick Douglas, a Baltimore native, once spoke those words. I have acted on those words since I first read them. There is so much to address in Baltimore: education, safety, jobs, environmental awareness, neighborhood improvement, tourism...and these are just some of the many important issues. Yes, it will be a struggle to see that all of these areas are addressed; but when the end result is progress, the struggle will certainly seem worthwhile.
T.S. Eliot spoke the truth when he said, "Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." I will not be satisfied with the mediocre standards of today; I will work tirelessly for the Baltimore I know we can be. I am not a risk, but I am willing to be the person you rely on to take one. I am willing to find out how far we can go--are you?.
Great Expectations,
Adam

What is City Council?
The City Council is the City's legislative body, with the power to
enact all ordinances and resolutions. City Council members are elected
from fourteen districts, and the President is elected at-large, by all
voters of the City. The fifteen City Council members, along with the
Mayor, act only by ordinance, resolution or motion. They adopt and may
alter the annual budget and confirm the Mayor's appointments. The City
Council is responsible for the appropriation and issuance of bonds. The
City Council determines its own rules of procedure, and its meetings are
open to the public.
City Council members are elected every four
years. They are elected to geographic districts of roughly the same
proportion of population.
